Return of the dream teams

When Salman Khan confirmed he will star in Sooraj Barjatya's next, he generated much excitement in the trade. The star and the recordbreaker filmmaker last worked together in Hum Saath Saath Hain in 1999. The film was their third straight blockbuster. A new film would mark their coming together after nearly a decade and half.

The tiff between Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan is a thing of the past. Farah, after her brief dud sojourn with Akshay Kumar, will direct erstwhile lucky mascot SRK in her next film Happy New Year once again.

Meanwhile Rohit Shetty, SRK's director in his next Chennai Express, the filmmaker said to have a Midas touch returns with his favourite Ajay Devgn next year. This, even as Akshay Kumar returns with Vipul Shah for the first time since Shah's 2008 production, Singh Is Kinng, in the sequel to their 2007 hit, Namastey London . Ranbir Kapoor and Anurag Basu will reunite for the director's next, Jagga Jasoos, after Barfi! . Jagga Jasoos will also mark the launching a production house jointly floated by the actor and the director.

While Ranbir and Anurag have worked together only recently, the other big actor- director pairs are reuniting after a hiatus.

Many of them hit the road hard with unsuccessful rendezvous while collaborating with filmmakers outside comfort zones.

A classic example of this would be Ajay Devgn, who beyond Rohit Shetty to put his trust in Sajid Khan. The duo together delivered the most disastrous film of 2013 so far, Himmatwala , landing a blow on Ajay's career. Similarly Shah Rukh Khan faced hard luck with his hyped Ra. One , directed by Anubhav Sinha.

Ranbir and Anurag Basu apart, another actor- director duo out to join hand to make films is John Abraham and Shoojit Sircar. After Vicky Donor , the crossover hit John produced and Shoojit directed last year, the two have decided to form a more permanent association.

"John and I have similar vision when it comes to films and are planning a few more together. We do not interfere in each other's space and enjoy working together," said Shoojit.

A star and a director who have delivered hits together in the past obviously share advantages.

These are times of fierce competition in Bollywood. Working with people who know your plus points and can positively use the same on screen is the formula stars are banking on. This explains the trend of reunions.

These are times of fierce competition. Working with a director who know your plus points helps.

Salman Khan & Sooraj Barjatya

So far: Maine Pyaar Kiya , Hum Aapke Hain Koun & Hum Saath Saath Hain

Coming up:

Barjatyas untitled next Barjatya is the man who has been instrumental for Salman's rise in his early years. After all, his Maine Pyar Kiya was Salman's first starring role, and a superhit. The duo's second outing, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, created records. Hum Saath Saath Hain let Salman explore a restrained avatar. Salman returns in his loverboy avatar of Prem, typified by Barjatya's films, with this project.

Why we want them together:
Barjatya and Salman created records in the past. The new film could help Salman scale that elusive record he has been after for a while: the biggest hit of all times that will break the record of 3 Idiots .

Ranbir Kapoor & Anurag Basu
So far:
Barfi!

Coming up:

Jagga Jasoos Ranbir and Anurag are gearing up for their second outing together, the unusually named Jagga Jasoos . Ranbir plays a detective in the film. The actor also plans to turn producer with the film. He will co- produce the venture with Anurag. The duo is working on the script and pre production. The film will go on floor next year. The leading lady for the film is yet to be announced.

Why we want them together:
Anurag managed to bring out the unexplored side of the chocolate boy superstar Ranbir as an actor, as the deaf and mute Barfi in the film. With Jagga Jasoos , one can again expect the director to tap another never- knownbefore streak in Ranbir.

Shah Rukh Khan & Farah Khan
So far: Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om

Coming up:
Happy New Year Shah Rukh and Farah unite for the first time since their 2007 superhit, Om Shanti Om ( OSO). Happy New Year also officially marks the patch- up between SRK and Farah. In between, Farah made Tees Maar Khan with Akshay Kumar but the film flopped. OSO debutante Deepika Padukone is SRK's heroine Happy New Year. The film will also star Abhishek Bachchan and Boman Irani.

Why we want them together:

Farah has always imagined wacky concepts for SRK, be it in Main Hoon Na or Om Shanti Om, and has utilised the superstar's glamour in the best possible way. For SRK, the film marks the return of a longtime friend to his folds, and a director who fully understands how to tap his charisma. Over- the- top entertainment becomes special when Farah directs SRK.

Akshay Kumar & Vipul Shah
So far: Waqt, Namastey London and Singh Is King

Coming up:

Namastey London 2 Half a decade after Shah last produced Singh Is Kinng for Akshay, the two have confirmed returning together with Namastey London 2 . Earlier this year Shah had announced his plans to make a bigger sequel to the 2007 hit. It is expected to be a fresh love triangle. The sequel will be shot on locations in France, Germany, Switzerland and London besides India. The heroine is to be decided.

Why we want them together:

With Vipul Shah, Akshay emerged as a different actor. Shah removed him from his larger- thanlife image with a strong dramatic role in Waqt, a romantic one in Namastey London and a comic one in Singh Is Kinng .
